Analytic philosophy and modern logic are intimately connected, both historically and systematically. Thinkers such as Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein were major contributors to the early development of both; and the fruitful use of modern logic in addressing philosophical problems was, and still is, definitive for large parts of the analytic tradition. More specifically, Frege's analysis of the concept of number, Russell's theory of descriptions, and Wittgenstein's notion of tautology have long been seen as paradigmatic pieces of philosophy in this tradition. (...) This close connection remained beyond what is now often called "early analytic philosophy", i.e., the tradition's first phase. In the present chapter I will consider three thinkers who played equally important and formative roles in analytic philosophy's second phase, the period from the 1920s to the 1950s: Rudolf Carnap, Kurt Gödel, and Alfred Tarski. We introduce an atomic formula ${\vec{y} \bot_{\vec{x}}\vec{z}}$ intuitively saying that the variables ${\vec{y}}$ are independent from the variables ${\vec{z}}$ if the variables ${\vec{x}}$ are kept constant. We contrast this with dependence logic ${\mathcal{D}}$ based on the atomic formula = ${(\vec{x}, \vec{y})}$ , actually equivalent to ${\vec{y} \bot_{\vec{x}}\vec{y}}$ , saying that the variables ${\vec{y}}$ are totally determined by the variables ${\vec{x}}$ . We show that ${\vec{y} \bot_{\vec{x}}\vec{z}}$ gives rise to a natural logic capable of formalizing basic intuitions about independence and dependence. (...) In Man for Himself , Erich Fromm examines the confusion of modern women and men who, because they lack faith in any principle by which life ought to be guided, become the helpless prey forces both within and without. From the broad, interdisciplinary perspective that marks Fromm’s distinguished oeuvre, he shows that psychology cannot divorce itself from the problems of philosophy and ethics, and that human nature cannot be understood without understanding the values and moral conflicts that confront us (...) all. He shows that an ethical system can be based on human nature rather than on revelations or traditions. Science and technology policy is often confronted with issues that are both complex and controversial and which have to be decided upon in a delicate constellation of policy-makers, experts, stakeholders, non-governmental organizations and the public. One attempt to deal with such a complex problem is via citizen involvement. Participatory technology assessment (pTA) already goes back to several decades, and countries have made various experiences. While in some countries, governments established technology assessment organizations, which also included pTA in their methodological portfolio, (...) others primarily rely on experts to make decisions on science and technology policy. In a third group of countries non-state actors, such as social scientists, experimented with pTA. However, they were often unable to link these experiments to policy-making. This paper deals with the question of why this variation exists and compares the use of pTA in Switzerland and Austria. Despite similarities between the two countries, both had quite different experiences with pTA so far. Whereas several pTAs have been carried out in Switzerland until today, Austrian pTAs have remained infrequent. The aim of this paper is to explain this difference as a result of different ways of policy-making which affect the use and chances of pTA. (shrink)

In this concluding chapter, we want to take a broader perspective and, based on the contributions to this book, identify the key lessons from the NewHoRRIzon project about RRI implementation in general and via Social Labs in particular. From a bird’s eye perspective, the NewHoRRIzon Social Labs can be seen as interventions that depend on and are affected by several interrelated levels which might be separated roughly in the micro-level of Social Labs, the meso level of organisations, and the macro-level (...) of national and European research and innovation systems and policy making. Rudolf Arnheim has been known, since the publication of his groundbreaking _Art and Visual Perception_ in 1974, as an authority on the psychological interpretation of the visual arts. Two anniversary volumes celebrate the landmark anniversaries of his works in 2009. It is a classical result of Mortimer that $L^2$ , first-order logic with two variables, is decidable for satisfiability. We show that going beyond $L^2$ by adding any one of the following leads to an undecidable logic:– very weak forms of recursion, viz.¶(i) transitive closure operations¶(ii) (restricted) monadic fixed-point operations¶– weak access to cardinalities, through the Härtig (or equicardinality) quantifier¶– a choice construct known as Hilbert's $\epsilon$ -operator.In fact all these extensions of $L^2$ prove to be undecidable both for satisfiability, (...) and for satisfiability in finite structures. Moreover most of them are hard for $\Sigma^1_1$ , the first level of the analytical hierachy, and thus have a much higher degree of undecidability than first-order logic. (shrink)

We establish a general hierarchy theorem for quantifier classes in the infinitary logic L∞ωωon finite structures. In particular, it is shown that no infinitary formula with bounded number of universal quantifiers can express the negation of a transitive closure.This implies the solution of several open problems in finite model theory: On finite structures, positive transitive closure logic is not closed under negation. More generally the hierarchy defined by interleaving negation and transitive closure operators is strict. This proves a conjecture of (...) Immerman.We also separate the expressive power of several extensions of Datalog, giving new insight in the fine structure of stratified Datalog. (shrink)

In vielen Einzelbeobachtungen ist dies gespiirt und nachgewiesen worden, aber bisher fehlt eine zusammenfas­ sende Darstellung, wie sie hier versucht wird. Der Kulturbereich, den man mit dem konstituierenden Vorspiel im Orient in geschichtlicher (...) Folge als Abendland, Europa oder moderne westliche Welt bezeichnet, unterscheidet sich von anderen Kulturen durch ein besonders sensibles, scharf ausgepragtes und in standiger Auseinan­ dersetzung mit Ideen und Realitaten herausgefordertes und gepragtes, sich wandelndes ZeitbewuBtsein. In keiner anderen Kultur hatte und hat Zeit eine vergleichbar wesentliche Bedeutung. Das europaische ZeitbewuBtsein wurde von friihen Lebenserfahrungen im Vorderen Orient, von religiosen Vorstellungen insbesondere des Juden­ turns und Christentums, von zunehmender Zeitgliederung durch Uhren und Kalender, von der Entwicklung der Naturwissenschaften, von den Be­ diirfnissen einer stadtischen und arbeitsteiligen Gesellschaft, von den Ei­ gengesetzlichkeiten der Wirtschaft und von der Entfaltung des Selbstbe­ wuBtseins der Bildungseliten sowie spater immer groBerer Schichten der Gesellschaft geformt und aktiviert. Das jeweilige ZeitbewuBtsein einer Epoche griindet also nicht in sich selbst, sondern ist einerseits Ausdruck iibernommener Tradition, andererseits auch eigener Lebenserfahrungen, religioser Erlebnisse, wissenschaftlicher Welterkundung, des Selbstbe­ wuBtseins innerhalb der Geschichte und der jeweiligen Art, den Sinn des Lebens zu deuten.
